I have been recently discovering Jim Keltner. I have simply missed this guy. When I was younger, it was the obvious cats--Peart, Gadd, Bozzio, Bonham, Smith and many others that played in popular bands.
Are there any drummers you guys have missed and want to discover or re-discover? Here's my current list:
Keltner
Andy Newmark
Jeff "Tain" Watts
Eddie Bayers
Brian Blade
Jack DeJohnette
Greg Errico
Richie Hayward
Paul Leim
Larrie London
Joseph Ziggy Modeliste

For AWSOME Newmark playing, you must get Sly and the Family Stone's "Fresh". He *kills* on that.
WHen I was younger (1984-6), I didn't get Michael Giles as much as I do now. He's got a really interesting way about his playing. I thought he was just terrible, but his playing makes much more sense now and is interesting as hell.

For Newmark I'd say aside from the Sly stuff, John Lennon's "Double Fantasy" comes to mind really fast......
As far as drummers...
Aynsley Dunbar
Jonathan Moffett
Richie Hayward
Chico Hamilton
and Alphonso Mouzon come to mind amongst others

Michael Giles was fantastic, especially on the MacDonald & Giles album recorded in 1970. Crimson always had/has neat drummers, like Bruford in the Starless & Bible Black era.
The Englishmen weren't the only drummers killing, the Americans had it going on too. Carmine Appice rocked best with Cactus---Parchment Farm features a bitchin' double bass shuffle and he plays some very heavy yet tasty technically correct drums on all three records. Bobby Caldwell with Johnny Winter/Captain Beyond/Armaggedon also pushed the limits of early 70s rock drummming.
Keltner was quite good in Little Village. I wonder if they ever toured?

'Avalon' by Roxy Music & 'Pro's & Cons of Hitchiking' by Roger Waters are my favourite Newmark records.
I think he may have been on 'Flesh & Blood' by Roxy Muic/Bryan Ferry but not sure...
